Cult leaders do this all the time. Ching Hai tells followers that the world is going to end or there is going to be a war very soon. Luckily she can help you (but it will cost you).
There were times when Ching Hai called on followers to suddenly pack their bags and fly to another country for a "retreat" because she predicted that there was going to be a war. This never happened to me but I have read stories about people quitting their jobs to go where Ching Hai told them to go. She used a lot of people for free, forced labor this way too.
